Cardboard Gangsters cleans up at Manchester International Film Festival

By | Blog, Film, Picture, Sound | No Comments
Mark O’Connor’s gritty Irish drama Cardboard Gangsters, starring Love Hate’s John Connors, had its international premiere at the 3rd Manchester International Film recently and won three of the main awards at the festival. The film picked up Best Feature Film, Best Overall Film, and Best Actor for John Connors. It also received special jury mentions for O’Connor’s Direction and Screenplay, and for Michael Lavelle’s Cinematography.
John Connors plays Jay Connolly, a part-time DJ and low level drug dealer in Darndale, an area victimised by gangs, drugs and social problems. When his welfare is cut off he decides it’s time to enter the big leagues with his gang, in order to help settle his family’s debts. His actions attract the attention of Sean Murphy, the son of the local drug king pin, Derra Murphy, who rules Darndale with an iron fist and has no problems eliminating any potential rivals. Jay knows he’s playing a dangerous game but plans to make just enough money to settle his family’s debts, get out of Darndale, and move to Spain with his pregnant girlfriend. Events spiral out of control when Jay becomes involved with Derra’s wife, and his gang are thrust in to harm’s way, which leaves Jay with a momentous decision to exact revenge, or turn the other cheek.
Cardboard Gangsters is produced by Richard Bolger for Five Knight Films, in association with O’Connor’s Stalker Films. DoP was Michael Lavelle (Patrick’s Day). The film is funded by the BAI, Filmbase, and TV3. It will be released via Wildcard Distribution later this year.

Pet Surgeons

By | Blog, Factual, Picture, Sound | No Comments

September 6th at 20:30 on RTÉ One

Our pets are our unconditional loving companions and so when things go wrong we do whatever we can to make things right.
At Gilabbey Veterinary Hospital in Cork, every day is a new challenge. With vet Shane Guerin at the helm, The Pet Surgeons investigate, diagnose, operate on and rehabilitate a range of animals from tiny kittens to bearded dragons and everything in between. Dealing with the diverse personalities of the pets and their owners is all in a day’s work at this busy hospital. With clients and patients arriving daily from all over the country, the staff never know who or what will come through the door next – a litter of feisty pups in need of micro-chipping, an exhausted homing pigeon that’s lost its way or an anorexic cheetah from Fota Wildlife Park.
In the course of the series, each story is related from the perspective of both the owners and the veterinary staff. We’ll see the animals at home before and after treatment, we’ll observe over the vets shoulders as they perform the most demanding surgical procedures and we’ll meet a team of nurses so passionate about their work that they’re prepared to take their patients home with them. The Pet Surgeons is life in an animal hospital as you’ve never seen it before – must see TV for anyone who’s ever loved a pet
Malcolm Moloney was Editor on this with Alan Sullivan completing the online, Nik Panteris on Grade and Colm Mullally taking care of the Sound.
